Hydrogen Water Potential Health Benefits

Many medical experts agree more research is needed to fully verify the advantages of hydrogen water.

However, some preliminary studies suggest the following potential benefits.

Reduced Side Effects from Radiation Therapy

In one study of 49 liver cancer patients, drinking hydrogen-rich water for 6 weeks during radiation therapy was linked to improved quality of life scores vs a placebo group.

Radiation side effects include fatigue, hair loss, skin problems, nausea and headaches. Further study is needed though.

Improved Athletic Performance

A small study of 10 soccer players found hydrogen water may reduce exercise-induced muscle fatigue and functional decline.

In another study, hydrogen water improved anaerobic capacity in trained cyclists but not untrained.

More research is required to confirm the effects on athletic performance.

Disease Prevention

Hydrogen water may contain antioxidants that help prevent oxidative stress, which is linked to cancer and other diseases.

Some early research also suggests anti-inflammatory effects that could lower heart disease risk.

However, these potential preventive benefits are not yet proven.

Meta Study

In a widely referenced January 2023 review of 30 studies, researchers were unable to draw firm conclusions about hydrogen water’s impact on inflammation, aging, and disease.

They noted encouraging results in some studies but said more rigorous human trials are needed.

Hydrogen Water Safety and Risks

Currently, hydrogen water is not linked to any major health risks when consumed in typical amounts.

The FDA considers it “generally recognized as safe” as long as the added hydrogen gas makes up less than 2.14% of the drink.

However, it’s unclear if the touted benefits are real or a placebo effect. Drinking excessive amounts of any type of water can also be dangerous.

Hydrogen Water Bottle Sustainability

Another aspect of hydrogen water is the reusable water bottle and pitcher nature of the products.

According to the Container Recycling Institute, 60 million plastic bottles
end up in landfills every day in the US alone.

One study indicated that 75% of Americans drink only 2.5 cups of water a day, leaving them chronically dehydrated.

Lastly, the OECD has found that only 9% of plastic is properly recycled, which means that the majority end up in landfills or as litter.
